Why Quail Meat Is Worth Eating

Most people in Pakistan grow up eating chicken and mutton. Quail meat (batair gosht) is different, and for good reason.

According to USDA nutritional data, 100g of raw quail meat contains roughly 20g of protein, 4mg of iron (50% of your daily value), and significant amounts of Vitamin B6, B12, phosphorus, and zinc. Compared to chicken, quail delivers 4 times more Vitamin C and 3 times more iron, gram for gram.

The higher iron content makes quail meat particularly good for women, children, and anyone recovering from illness. In traditional Pakistani and Unani medicine, batair ka gosht has long been considered a strengthening food, and the nutritional data backs that up.

How Pakistani Families Cook Batair

Batair karahi is the most popular way to cook quail in Pakistan. The small birds cook fast, 15 to 20 minutes in a hot karahi with tomatoes, green chillies, ginger, and garam masala. The meat stays soft because quail has fine muscle fibres that don’t toughen up the way chicken leg meat can.

Other ways our customers use our fresh quail meat:

Grilled batair — marinate in yogurt, salt, and red chilli for 30 minutes, then grill on coal for 8–10 minutes per side

Batair fry — shallow fry whole birds after marinating in turmeric, chilli, and garlic paste

Roasted quail — oven roast at 200°C for 20–25 minutes with herbs and butter

Batair pulao — cook with basmati rice, whole spices, and fried onions for a special occasion dish

Because each bird is small (100–120g), quail is perfect for individual servings. One bird per person for a starter, two birds per person for a full meal.

Our Sourcing and Halal Process

At Field n Feather, we raise quail at our own farm facility in Lahore. Here’s what that means for you:

Farm-raised, not wild-caught. Our quail are Coturnix (Japanese quail), the same breed used worldwide for meat production. They’re raised in clean, ventilated housing with access to fresh water and natural feed. No cages.

No antibiotics, no hormones. We don’t use growth promoters or routine antibiotics. Sick birds are separated and treated individually, they never enter the food chain.

Halal hand-slaughter

A trained Muslim slaughterman performs every slaughter by hand. We follow the complete Zabiha process:

  • The bird faces Qibla
  • Bismillah is recited
  • The throat is cut with a sharp knife severing the windpipe, food tract, and jugular veins
  • This is not machine slaughter.

Same-day processing. We slaughter, clean, and pack on the day of dispatch. Your order reaches you fresh, not sitting in a warehouse.
